Does Kroger Drug Test? Kroger Drug Testing and Medical Leave Policies

Quick Answer: Kroger maintains a drug-free workplace policy and commonly requires a pre-employment drug screen after a conditional job offer, with added testing for current associates after accidents or when there is reasonable suspicion of impairment. Associates who need substance use treatment may also qualify for job-protected time off through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Kroger's own leave programs.

At Turning Point Recovery Network, we help working Texans, including grocery, pharmacy, and warehouse professionals, get addiction treatment without putting their careers on hold.

Does Kroger Drug Test New Hires?

Most Kroger locations screen new hires, though the exact process depends on the division, the state, and the position. Testing usually happens after a conditional offer, so the job isn't final until your results clear.

The same expectations generally apply across the Kroger family of stores, including banners such as Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Ralphs, Harris Teeter, and Fry's. Pharmacy and distribution center roles often see the most consistent screening because they involve controlled substances or heavy equipment.

What Kind of Drug Test Does Kroger Use?

Kroger typically uses an oral fluid (mouth swab) test or a urine test processed by a third-party lab. A standard five-panel screen checks for marijuana (THC), cocaine, amphetamines, opioids such as codeine and morphine, and phencyclidine (PCP).

Mouth swabs mainly detect use from the past day or two. Urine tests reach further back, from a few days for most drugs to several weeks for frequent marijuana use.

If you take a prescribed medication that could show up, a medical review officer can confirm your prescription before results go to the employer.

When Does Kroger Test Current Employees?

Kroger can test current associates after a workplace accident or when a manager has reasonable suspicion of impairment. Random testing is uncommon for most store roles. Commercial drivers in Kroger's supply chain are the exception, since federal Department of Transportation (DOT) rules require random testing for CDL holders.

A positive result usually ends a conditional job offer. For current employees, consequences can include discipline up to termination, and union contracts, such as those negotiated by UFCW locals, may add steps to the process.

Does Kroger Test for Marijuana?

Kroger's standard panels generally include THC, but state law affects how employers can act on the results. A handful of states, such as Nevada, limit rejecting applicants over a positive marijuana screen.

Texas offers no such protection. Recreational marijuana remains illegal here, and the state's limited medical program doesn't require private employers to accommodate use. Hemp-derived products like delta-8 can also trigger a positive THC result.

What Are Kroger's Medical Leave Policies?

Kroger offers paid time off, FMLA leave, short- and long-term disability, and other leaves of absence, with eligibility depending on role, location, and union agreement. A third-party administrator handles many medical leave claims, and Kroger's benefits also include mental health resources.

The FMLA gives eligible associates up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave per year while keeping group health coverage in place. You generally qualify after 12 months of service and at least 1,250 hours worked in the previous year.

Addiction treatment can count as a serious health condition under the FMLA when a health care provider delivers or refers the care. Time missed because of substance use itself doesn't qualify.

How the ADA Protects Kroger Employees in Recovery

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects workers in recovery who aren't currently using illegal drugs, and alcohol use disorder can also qualify as a disability. Protection may include reasonable accommodations, like a shift change to attend outpatient sessions.

Timing matters. Asking for help before a failed test or Kroger drug test policy violation generally leaves you on much stronger footing than seeking treatment afterward.

FAQs About Kroger Drug Testing Policies & Kroger Medical Leave of Absence

Standard drug panels don't detect alcohol. However, a breath or blood alcohol test may be used after an accident, under reasonable suspicion, or for DOT-regulated drivers.

Reapplying is often possible after a waiting period, which varies by division. Check with the hiring office for your area before submitting a new application.
Yes, FMLA leave itself is unpaid, but you may be able to use accrued PTO or short-term disability benefits for income during your absence. Your leave administrator can explain which apply to you.

Your manager typically learns only that leave is approved and when you'll return. Medical details stay with the leave administrator, and federal law protects the confidentiality of your treatment records with us.

Negative results usually come back within one to three business days. A positive screen takes longer because the lab runs a confirmation test and a medical review officer verifies the result before reporting it.

Most internal moves don't trigger a new test. Moving into a safety-sensitive position, such as a commercial driving role, does require a DOT drug test before you start.
